Best Worm Bin Bedding Materials and How Much to Use | Worm Farming Guide - Lumbri Worms & Garden, LLC

Why Worm Bin Bedding Matters

Creating the perfect bedding is the foundation of a healthy worm farm. Bedding provides aeration, holds moisture, and helps regulate the worm bin environment—leading to thriving worms and nutrient-rich castings.

Here’s a breakdown of the best bedding materials and how much to use for optimal results.

1. Shredded Cardboard & Paper (2–4 inches deep)

  • Soak in non-chlorinated water until damp (like a wrung-out sponge).
  • Tear into small pieces for better aeration and faster breakdown.
  • Best mix: 3 parts cardboard & paper + ½ part spent coffee grounds.

2. Coconut Coir (½–1 inch layer)

  • Expands when hydrated; soak before use.
  • Excellent for moisture retention and aeration.
  • Mix ratio: 3 parts cardboard & paper + 1 part coconut coir + ½ part coffee grounds.

3. Peat Moss (½–1 inch layer)

  • Holds moisture but can be acidic.
  • Balance with pulverized eggshells or oyster shell flour.
  • Mix ratio: 3 parts cardboard & paper + 1 part peat moss + ½ part coffee grounds.

4. Aged Horse or Cow Manure (Thin ½ inch layer)

  • Excellent nutrient source, but must be aged to prevent heat and ammonia.
  • Mix ratio: 3 parts cardboard & paper + 1 part aged manure + ½ part coffee grounds.

5. Shredded Leaves (1–2 inch layer)

  • Rich in carbon and beneficial microbes.
  • Prevent matting by mixing with other bedding.
  • Mix ratio: 2 parts cardboard & paper + 1 part shredded leaves + ½ part coffee grounds.

6. Wood Shavings or Sawdust (Light sprinkle, ½ inch max)

  • Decomposes slowly—use sparingly.
  • Avoid chemically treated wood.
  • Mix ratio: 3 parts cardboard & paper + 1 part shavings + ½ part coffee grounds.

7. Pulverized Eggshells or Oyster Shell Flour (1–2 tbsp per sq. ft.)

  • Provides grit for worm digestion.
  • Neutralizes acidity and balances pH.

8. Finished Compost or Worm Castings (½ inch layer)

  • Kickstarts microbial activity.
  • Helps worms acclimate to their new home.
  • Mix ratio: 3 parts cardboard & paper + 1 part compost/castings + ½ part coffee grounds.

Bedding Tips for Success

  • Maintain a 6–8 inch bedding depth for healthy worm activity.
  • Keep moisture levels like a wrung-out sponge.
  • Fluff bedding regularly to avoid compaction.

Final Word

With the right bedding mix, your worms will stay comfortable, multiply faster, and produce rich, organic worm castings to supercharge your garden.
