Best Bedding for Your Worm Bin & How Much to Use

Creating the perfect bedding for your worm bin is crucial for a thriving worm farm. Here’s a list of the best materials to use and the recommended amounts for optimal results.

1. Shredded Cardboard & Paper (2-4 inches deep)

  • Soak in water until damp but not dripping.

  • Tear into small pieces for better aeration and breakdown.

2. Coconut Coir (½ to 1 inch layer)

  • Expands when hydrated; soak before use.

  • Excellent moisture retention and aeration.

Mixture of 1 & 2:

  • 3 parts shredded cardboard & paper to 1 part coconut coir to ½ part spent coffee grounds

  • Ensures proper aeration and moisture retention

3. Peat Moss (½ to 1 inch layer)

  • Holds moisture well but can be acidic; balance with crushed eggshells.

Mixture of 1 & 3:

  • 3 parts shredded cardboard & paper to 1 part peat moss to ½ part spent coffee grounds

  • Balances moisture and structure while reducing acidity

4. Aged Horse or Cow Manure (Thin layer, about ½ inch)

  • Great nutrient source but must be aged to avoid excess heat and ammonia.

Mixture of 1 & 4:

  • 3 parts shredded cardboard & paper to 1 part aged manure to ½ part spent coffee grounds

  • Provides structure while enriching with nutrients

5. Shredded Leaves (1-2 inch layer)

  • Rich in carbon and beneficial microbes.

  • Mix with other bedding to prevent matting.

Mixture of 1 & 5:

  • 2 parts shredded cardboard & paper to 1 part shredded leaves to ½ part spent coffee grounds

  • Enhances microbial diversity and aeration

6. Wood Shavings or Sawdust (Thin sprinkling, no more than ½ inch)

  • Use in moderation as it decomposes slowly.

  • Avoid chemically treated wood.

Mixture of 1 & 6:

  • 3 parts shredded cardboard & paper to 1 part wood shavings or sawdust to ½ part spent coffee grounds

  • Adds structure but should be used sparingly to prevent compaction

7. Pulverized Eggshells (1-2 tablespoons per square foot)

  • Provides grit for digestion and helps neutralize acidity.

  • Supports digestion and pH balance

8. Finished Compost or Aged Worm Castings (½ inch layer)

  • Kickstarts microbial activity and helps worms acclimate.

Mixture of 1 & 8:

  • 3 parts shredded cardboard & paper to 1 part finished compost or worm castings to ½ part spent coffee grounds

  • Boosts microbial activity and provides a familiar environment for worms

Bedding Tips:

  • Maintain a bedding depth of 6-8 inches for optimal worm health.

  • Keep moisture levels like a wrung-out sponge.

  • Fluff the bedding regularly for aeration.

With the right bedding and balance, your worms will thrive and produce nutrient-rich castings for your garden!
