THE WORM BIN CONTAINER
This can be as simple as a tote, bus bin, mortar tray, an old bathtub, old refrigerator, or a Styrofoam ice chest destined for the landfill
HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR WORM BIN
- Moisture: Bedding should be damp like a wrung-out sponge evenly moist but not dripping. If the bedding is too dry, lightly mist with non-chlorinated water. If it's too wet, add dry shredded paper or cardboard to absorb excess moisture. Avoid glossy or heavily inked paper. For a worm-friendly environment, it’s ideal to use unbleached, non-glossy paper or cardboard whenever possible.
- Air: Worms need air to breath, and it can be helpful to “fluff” your bin every 2 weeks by running your hands through it and loosening up the bedding. Proper aeration prevents the buildup of anaerobic bacteria, which can cause unpleasant odors and harm the worms.
- Feeding: Start small with 1 cup of frozen food scraps/week. If the food is gone, it’s time to feed again. If there is still some left, wait a couple days. When you add the food, sprinkle ground eggshells on top, then cover with shredded cardboard, newspaper, or leaves.
- DO Feed: Frozen fruit and veggie scraps, coffee grounds, ground eggshells.
- DON’T Feed: Seasoned cooked foods, oils, dairy, meat, garlic, onions, citrus, or spicy foods.
