Worm Castings Calendar 🪱🌱

By Aya | Lumbri Worms & Garden, LLC

If you’re gardening, timing is everything. Worm castings are the ultimate soil booster, but when you apply them makes all the difference. That’s why we created the Worm Castings Calendar — a month-by-month guide for growers.

🌱 January–February (Deep Winter)

Soil life is sleeping. No need to apply castings yet. Keep your beds mulched to protect microbial activity.

🌱 March (Pre-Spring Wake-Up)

As the soil warms, spread ½–1" of castings across veggie beds. Lightly rake in. Top-dress overwintered crops like garlic and onions.

🌱 April (Planting Season)

Mix a handful of castings into each transplant hole for tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. Sprinkle a thin layer over seed rows to boost germination.

🌱 May–June (Early Growth)

Side-dress heavy feeders (tomatoes, squash, corn) with ½–1 cup per plant. Broadcast a ¼–½" layer for leafy greens.

🌱 July–August (Peak Summer Push)

Reapply every 6–8 weeks around heavy feeders. Brew worm tea for foliar spraying to help plants through heat stress.

🌱 September (Fall Planting)

Work ½" of castings into beds before planting fall crops like kale, broccoli, and carrots. Side-dress perennials before dormancy.

🌱 October–November (Wind-Down)

Spread ½–1" of castings after pulling summer crops. Cover with leaves or straw to “tuck in” microbes for winter.

🌱 December (Rest Mode)

No castings needed. Let mulch and microbes do the work until spring.

Why Worm Castings Work Year-Round

  • Nutrient-rich but won’t burn plants
  • Microbe-packed to boost soil health
  • Moisture-retentive to help beds survive Maryland’s hot summers
  • Long-lasting so even fall applications feed into spring
